Better advertising and planning was needed - awkward
Starting at 6:00 PM, the Mamma Mia! show was originally advertised, but it appeared that additional opening acts were added that were not originally advertised (or very openly advertised). Luckily, my friends and I decided to go later and not arrive until 8:30 since we weren't interested in seeing the opening acts, but it was irritating that the advertising wasn't clear. The day of the show I was searching Live Nation website for venue rules as to what I could bring into the show, and happened to stumble upon a schedule saying that Mamma Mia! was not scheduled to even start until 9PM. It didn't seem like they did much advertising to reach out to fans/new fans, as the venue was somewhat awkwardly empty. When we arrived at about 8:30, the venue was pretty quiet and it seemed that the last opening act had finished, but the venue/sound crew/whoever was responsible didn't play any other music, just left it quiet and awkward until Mamma Mia! came on. The actual performance had a good sound and pretty good energy, but was an awkward fit for the space since the space/crowd was a bit empty and low-energy. Maybe some of the crowd had arrived at 6 expecting Mamma Mia! to come on at 7:30 or so. Maybe not enough people in Chicago knew the music - disappointing :( It kinda sucks to pay $76 (for a seated ticket, although we ended up hanging out in general admission standing crowd since it was a bit more energetic) when the overall atmosphere was somewhat stale and lacking in energy.
